Worlds Within a World | Vandalism

On April 30th, 2014, CCP Games unveiled a monument to Eve Online in Reykjavik, Iceland prior to Fanfest 2014. The following is an image of the "Worlds Within a World" monument and a description about the monument and what it means:

According to the official website,

"The monument is an a outdoor sculpture by the artist Sigurður Guðmundsson with help and input from EVE Online‘s own art directors Börkur Eiríksson and Ásgeir Jón Ásgeirsson. It will stand at over five meters tall and will consist of two main elements facing each other through a highly polished stainless steel surface in the middle that reflects and mirrors the elements and the landscape. On the left side of the model stands a dark aluminum structure with a quote from the EVE Universe and on the right a dark granite facial figure representing the players behind the game."

This morning, Gaius Homerson (@The_Real_Gevlon) tweeted the following:

found your name and lost it again. You're welcome, everyone in eve!

Now, Xenuria is a quite infamous player, known throughout a number of communities for various shenanigans and various actions leading to him being very well known in some circles, albeit almost never more than to be ridiculed and/or the butt of any number of jokes.

That being said, I think this guy is a goofball, but harmless.

A couple days ago, when I saw that a Bee Sticker had been placed on the monument, that some players were claiming was vandalism, I felt it was distasteful, and something that shouldn't have happened, but it was easy enough to remove.

So, while the sticker was distasteful/disagreeable and to some vandalism, I can say that scratching out someone's name, regardless of who the player is in the game, is clearly vandalism and completely disrespectful to Sigurður Guðmundsson, Börkur Eiríksson, Ásgeir Jón Ásgeirsson, CCP Games, the residents of Reykjavik, and the entire Eve playerbase. Now, some may say that I may be blowing up the importance/relevance of this monument and this incident, but to be fair, I was happy to see them establish something dedicated to the game and it's community, and quite proud that I have a few names on there. I'll also look forward to seeing this monument and my names when I get the opportunity to visit.

Anyhow, I hope that CCP Games finds the appropriate resolution and that actions like this don't continue. This is why we can't have nice things, guys...

Update: CCP Falcon provided an update this afternoon.

  1. Didn't think this was real, just photo shopped. Sad that it turned out to be true.
